The Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd. (FIAO), an IRS 501©3 not for profit organization, operating community based after school programs in local South Brooklyn schools. These programs are offered free of charge to students.
FIAO’s after school programs offer a safe, encouraging and stimulating environment where south brooklyn youth can receive academic support, explore new things through arts and technology, and cultivate character and positive self-image.

FIAO Beacon Community Center
FIAO’s Beacon collaborative effort of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), F.I.A.O., Seth Low I.S. 96, and a host of community-based service organizations throughout the New York Tri-State area.
Beacons are school-based community centers designed to establish save havens for community residents. Children of all ages and their families who live, work, and play in the area surrounding the center are invited to participate. These activities are offered during after school hours, evenings and weekends, six days a week all year round.

OASAS After School Prevention Programs
After School Prevention programs are offered in various elementary and middle schools in Brooklyn and funded by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). All program participants receive OASAS approved Evidence Based Programs which focus on making positive choices, self-esteem, decision making etc. In addition, students participate in Recreation, Visual and Performing Arts and Board Games.

SONYC & COMPASS Locations
The COMPASS and SONYC concept focuses on the fact that the major part of a young person’s life that takes place outside of the school classroom – after school, on weekends, and during school vacations. This free time is optimal for developing a young person’s social, emotional and academic capabilities. It also represents a time when many young people are without parental supervision and need to be in safe and supportive environments. COMPASS and SONYC programs offer a balanced mix of academic support, sports and recreational activities, the arts and cultural experiences. OST programs not only build upon the school-day lessons, but they also open up new worlds and opportunities for youth.

After School Program
Advantage After School Programs (AASP) provide quality youth development opportunities to school-age children and youth for three hours directly after school. AASPs are supported by school, community, public and private partnerships. AASPs offer a broad range of educational, recreational, and culturally age-appropriate activities that integrate what happens during the school day. AASPs also provide working parents with a safe place for their children. Youth and family involvement in program planning and implementation is a key component.
